New Instant Recall Capability
-----------------------------
You can now choose to run Instant Recall as either memory-resident or
stand-alone. Typing "instant" at the DOS prompt loads Instant Recall
as stand-alone. When you exit Instant Recall will not remain in
memory. This is useful when you only want Instant Recall for a moment,
without taking up memory space from other programs. Another reason is
if there is an incompatibility between another program and Instant
Recall in memory-resident mode.
Typing "instant r" at the DOS prompt loads Instant Recall as
memory-resident, always available. Instant Recall needs about 70K of
memory. This is probably how you usually will use Instant Recall.
This new capability is not listed in the printed manual yet, so you may
want to write it into the manual.
How to Use Instant Recall
-------------------------
Instant Recall is a tool much like the word processor. The word
processor doesn`t tell you what to write, or how to write it. It merely
facilitates the writing process.
Instant Recall doesn't tell you which data to put in the database, or
how to structure it. It merely facilitates your data management.
On your disk is a file called ir_uses.doc. This ASCII file lists a
number of possible uses for Instant Recall. Look at it to get some
ideas for your own use.
Philosophy Behind Instant Recall
--------------------------------
Instant Recall is unlike other programs in a number of ways. Clearly
there are other programs that are databases, a few of which are
free-form. Also there are memory-resident programs like Sidekick and
Ready. But, to our knowledge, there are no other free-form,
memory-resident databases. Out of this uniqueness comes some design
constraints:
* Simplicity vs. Comprehensiveness:
Rather than try to be everything to everybody, we aimed to provide the
core capability needed to support your free-form information management
needs. There are two reasons for this; first, as a memory-resident
program, the less memory space taken up by code, the better. Second, it
is much easier to learn and understand a focused program than a be-all
program.
* Single vs. Multiple Databases:
Instant Recall has a single, heterogeneous database. All of your data,
in all its different forms, goes into it. You don't need to worry about
what file to put a particular piece of data, or where in the file. So
having Instant Recall take that responsibility is very convenient (also
powerful - related data you may have forgotten about is often retrieved
unexpectedly and serendipitously).
On the other hand, some people may have a need to explicitly segment
their data, or need to store more than 2Mbytes. A future version of
Instant Recall will support multiple databases.
* Speed and Interactiveness:
Every attempt was made to make Instant Recall fast, so your work is
streamlined rather than hindered, and so you can maintain your train of
thought. Unlike other programs that make you re-index a file after you
change it, Instant Recall re-indexes on the fly, quickly.
